Pineapples have always been that fruit that has fascinated me. Pineapples are a tropical fruit that is a part of the bromeliad family. These fancy plants can come from the tops of the pineapple (the crown), a seed, or a pup that is grown off of the mother plant. These are interesting because the plant is already growing attached to the pineapple. This plant can be twisted off and separated from the fruit and placed in water. In a coming blog post I will highlight how exactly to start these plants in water. Pineapple has long been a staple food in the Polynesian cultures. They use it for virtually any food. This was one of my favorite concepts about traveling to Hawaii. Trying the different variations of food along with the fruit. Locally grown, fresh fruit tastes so much better than what we can get here on the mainland. There is just something different -and certainly rewarding- about eating freshly picked food. These golden fruits are certainly acidic and can cause quite a bit of pain while eating them. There is another variety of pineapple, specific to the island of Kauai, called Kauai Sugarloaf Pineapple. I did mention this in a couple other posts. This pineapple has a white flesh that is creamy and delectable. It tastes sweet, but not too sweet. It is a perfect flavor and texture that balances out against the pallet. This pineapple has an edible core, so this cuts down on waste, time cutting, and adds to the uniqueness of the fruit. These can be easily juiced to create the perfect summer treat. These are mostly found on the island of Kauai. They are hard to come by. If you are on a trip and wanting to pick up some of these fruits, then make sure to head to the farmers markets early. They are worth the chasing around, extra waiting, and money. Hawaii produces some of the best fruit, in my opinion, in the United States. It is no strange surprise that Hawaii has supplied the world with a lot of pineapples. Since the beginning of these islands, pineapple has long been the forefront of the islands. Hawaii is really one of the leading reasons why we have access to these delicious fruits today. See, Hawaii isn't just about the warm, tropical beaches and palm trees swaying in the wind. Hawaii has more than that. They offer a wonderful culture, delectable fruits, and a unique food pallet to choose from. "A pineapple a day keeps the worries away." Next time you visit the islands make sure to eat some pineapple and take some home too. These delicious fruits provide a punch of flavor. That is exactly why the pineapple is my favorite fruit by far.
